I have always loved art and its various mediums. I decided to act on my love for the arts and pursue graphic design. My love for art and BFA in Graphic Design from CSU Fullerton have taken me to far away lands, exposed me to new ideas, and had the opportunity to work with savvy business folk. I wanted to propel my career further and explore other media, and brand myself appropriately. I created Little Wing Creates, which is my artistic passion project and creative outlet.
Why Little Wing? After I got married and changed my surname I realized that my name was now extremely common. To separate myself from the rest I had to come up with a unique moniker. And yes, it’s a song by Jimi Hendrix. The first verse really spoke to my creative mind. (Never heard it? Link to my Creative Juice Jamz playlist. Headphones/Airpods recommended.)
My main goal for this passion project was to further my knowledge and learn supplementary material that I didn't learn while at school. So far I have advanced my knowledge of entrepreneurial skills, freelancing, digital illustration, modern calligraphy, lettering, motion graphics, and building my creative confidence. The way I learned many of my new skills was through calligraphy workshops, John King's sign painting course, Skillshare, Lauren Hom's Passion to Paid, joining groups with like-minded, artistic people, and good ol' trial and error. Pushing myself to do things that I once thought daunting became fun. I whole-heartedly believe that anything is possible when you take the time to learn it…or sometimes take a crash course on Youtube.
My creative approach in my work is to find a way to create a single idea that works for the main problem that consists of opposing ideas or mediums. For example, using hand drawn calligraphy in a motion graphic, using textures from real life to enhance a digital illustration or even taking a traditional idea and trying to make it work in a modern setting. But I can also switch gears and create designs that would fit a client's vision. Another thing that I like to incorporate in my work is color. All of my designs start with a sketching session and flushing out all ideas. No idea is ever a bad one. Research and mood boards are extremely important to my process as well. A well-researched project will stand out among the rest and will help the audience identify with the final product.
